About the Author
Success did not come easy for this Chicago native, who was born in 1963. In 1994 he was driving trains for the Chicago Transit Authority and struggling to keep a small business from going under. In 1995 he released his first book, Never Satisfied: How and Why Men Cheat, a controversial book of short stories about unfaithful men and the women who support their irresponsible behavior. The large New York publishing companies rejected his work, saying it wasnt marketable - which basically meant, it wasnt good enough. Not willing to concede defeat, Michael decided to self-publish. He borrowed money from friends and family, charged his credit cards to the limit, and sold his automobile.

Within eight months, he sold more than 50,000 books and was on Essence and Emerge magazines best sellers lists. He toured with black expos, sorority conventions, and book fairs. He even signed books at the local night clubs, and hair salons. I was determined to make it! he says. I would sell books at a funeral if they let me. Eventually, his popularity grew and so did the demand for his next book. This time, instead of writing another book on relationships, Michael took a gamble on a novel. There was a void in African-American novels written by men, he explained. I wanted to destroy the myth that men dont read.

In July of 1997 he released his second book, Men Cry in the Dark. Once again, the book was a big success, selling 30,000 hard cover editions during the first six months. This time the national media paid attention. Michael has been a guest on several local and national radio programs, including the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. His electrifying personality has earned repeated appearances on talk shows such as Ricki Lake, Sally Jesse, Maury Povich, and Queen Latifah, and The View. He has also been a guest host for Tavis Smiley on BET Tonight.

Michael is happily single and is currently living in Atlanta Georgia. where he is working on another controversial book.

At that moment Ellie begins to wonder what it must be like to be a new kid, feeling so "different and strange," and she decides to take steps to get to know him, even at the risk of facing her friends' ridicule. ("At school the next day the kids stopped her and said, / 'You were walking with Lazlo, are you sick in the head?' / Ellie paused and replied, 'Now I know him, you see, / Lazlo isn't that different from you and from me.'"

Gasky, who speaks and looks different from everyone else, arrives at Brookhaven School, the other kids are quick to both tease and alienate him. Some weeks later, when Ellie McSnelly sees Lazlo's tearful mother, the girl makes kind overtures to him that Lazlo happily returns many times over. Ellie soon inspires others to extend a hand in friendship. Couric's laudable message of inclusion comes through. Unfortunately, however, the narrative's rhyming-couplets format results in forced, sometimes ungrammatical, phrasing (e.g., "They arrived at his door greeted by his French poodle/ and Mrs. Gasky was there with a plate of warm strudel!" and "He's terrific at chess, and his Mom's really sweet./ Playing soccer the guy doesn't have two left feet"). In what appears to be a hole in the plot, Ellie's best friend, Carrie, from whom she is initially inseparable, all but disappears for much of the proceedings. Priceman (Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin) compensates by picturing Carrie even when she's absent from the text. Using softer lines and more muted hues than usual, the artist captures a full gamut of emotion, particularly in the crabby faces of taunting classmates and a beaming portrait of Lazlo at the moment he makes his first real friend. K-Gr 2-When Lazlo S. Gasky, the new kid in town, goes to school, he is teased, left out of games, and even tripped while carrying his lunch tray. It's not until one of his classmates sees his mother crying that she considers being nice to Lazlo. After a day of playing chess and eating strudel together, Ellie sticks up for him at school. The rhyming text, although at times awkward as well as faulty in cadence, helps keep the tone light. However, it also raises some major concerns, mainly the lack of adult intervention. Where are the adults when Lazlo is being maligned? Why does "the best teacher by far in the whole second grade" single out the new student by drawing attention to his "different" name? Where's the gym teacher or the lunch monitor when Lazlo is being mistreated? And how is it that a student is privy to Mrs. Gasky's concerns? "Her son's having trouble, she might pull him out,/this school may be wrong for him, she's full of doubt." Pen-and-ink and watercolor art helps to create distinct and sympathetic characters. Readers have only to see the transformation of Lazlo's face as he smiles to know how much it means to him to have a friend. There was some good info but I have a few problems with the book:1) it only focuses on legs & abs, neglecting arms, back, and shoulders.2) the equipment featured is mostly machines and there isn't much about using free weights3) I think the moves could have been explained a little better4) there's a weird amount of nudity in this book. I don't mind nudity in anatomy books but there were times when it felt excessive (ie. a model being topless when demonstrating leg exercises) which gave the book a creepy vibe.

Although it is a well-drawn book and has a lot of exercises for the glutes and legs, I must agree with most other commenters and add to the disdain. I have both this book and the regular Strength Training Anatomy (3rd Ed). I have three main complaints about this book:1. Are women only supposed to be concerned with our lower bodies? I feel this is once again hitting on a stereotypical bias. I feel that yes, a lot of men are more concerned with the appearance and development of their upper body. But again, this is a stereotype and many men train legs and glutes just as much. Am I more concerned with developing my lower body, yes, but not to the complete exclusion of my upper body. I had to buy two books to get a complete guide of the WHOLE body.2. In the beginning of Strength Training Anatomy there is a list of muscles and color coding that lines the outer edge of each page for each exercise. These oval colors tell you which muscle is being worked and in what order/extent. This has been excluded in the book for women. This key added to the ease and practical use for the first book.3. Most of the exercises for women have a recommendation that only high repetitions should be used for each exercise. Once again this is a stereotype that women need to do more work to get muscle or lift lighter weights to stay "lean". Modern research has shown that although our chemistry and hormones are different, muscle is built best in a certain rep range (most studies confirm that 6-12 rep range is best for hypertrophy and anything above that is best for endurance). Yes higher rep ranges will still build muscle... eventually. But it is not the best for creating hypertrophy. Even though the author, himself, shows that there are three different body types for women which build muscle differently, yet he recommends the same outdated information for every woman in the rest of his book.Overall, the book is good to add a few more exercises for the lower body but expect outdated information and gender bias as you read. Not a complete waste but definitely an incomplete manual.

What happened to upper body? No arms, shoulders, back is an after-thought for a couple pages at the end of the book. I should have read the product description more carefully. I just bought the other version next that seems more inclusive. There's alot of good info on lower body here, it's just not fully comprehensive enough to use for a full-body reference. I don't undestand why they left the rest out.

This is a very well illustrated book on strength training anatomy. It has three strong points. (1) It is inexpensive. (2) It shows proper technique for comon exercises in the gym that "mortal human beings" actually do. Many other books are designed with illustrations of Arnold Schwartzenager-like bodys lifting free weights the size of train wheels. If you are interested in the "Schwartzenager" version of this book get a copy of "Strength Training Anatomy" by Delavier. It is the "male " companion book to this one. It can be downloaded free, on the web, if you do a little searching on Google. (3) The best part of this book is that is shows you what "not" to do. It gives illustrations and warnings about bad technique, and how you can get hurt.

I'm so happy that a trainer at the YMCA recommended this! I especially love the variations on the machines that can work different areas of the body. This is very informative and the layout is terrific. I'm now taking it to the Y and sharing it with friends who are also ordering it.

The standard version of this book "Strength Training Anatomy" is iconic. As a personal trainer, I recommended it many times to clients with it's innovative look inside the muscle structure to show which muscles work during each exercise. However, this "women's" edition is quite incomplete as if all women need to work is their legs, butt and bust. Buy the original!

Again another good addition for my fitness collection. This is a really good by for women who are just getting started or for women who exercise regularly, but do not know how to build a good routine for our troubled areas. Or basically to have more knowledge about what they are doing and how to do it right.

I have his Strength Training Anatomy which shows both male and female bodies, but this is perfect if you're already knowledgable, actively workout and either want to learn or sharpen your anatomy skills.It's also fantastic at showing detailed exercises for every single female body part there is.For beginners.For experts.This book ROCKS!No serious workout should be without this book!

I have a rather full library of books on health as I have sought to understand a physical problem i have suffered for 10 years that is now finally resolving. In my journey few books have had as much real solid information as this one. I congratulate the author, not only for a well written book, but for the immense about of original research reported to us. Dr. Tennant has defined and codified the use of electricity in the body. He has mapped the "wiring" to all body parts and has provided a system of treatment to the reader that can restore health. He has unified the flows of acupuncture, the chakras and the nervous system. There truly is no other book like it.The book is now in it's third iteration. Much was added between the 2nd and 3rd publishing. For example the chapter on fulvic acid.I will state that I have been using an electrical energy device for about 3 years, and if I had not had it, I would hate to contemplate the condition I would be in without it. No, it is not the Biomodulator (his energy device) and I do not mention what it is because I do not want to taint or take away from this review by directing attention elsewhere. The point is, the use of electrons and frequency are vital elements of healing and living fully. Dr. Tennant had gifted us with a treasure in this book. Anyone who wants to understand the use of electrons and frequency in the body will not be disappointed.

I would recommend to purchase a "Hard Copy" of this book ( so you can "work with it" more easily !

About the Author

John Edward Hasse is a music historian, pianist, and award-winning author and record producer.  Since 1984, he has served as Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, where he founded the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Jazz Appreciation Month.  He is the author of Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington, and co-producer/co-author of the book-and-six-disc set Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology.

 

Tad Lathrop has authored, produced, or edited more than 50 books on music, including Jazz: The First Century and two lauded volumes on the business of music.
