About the Author

Eugenia Hepworth Berger became interested in parent involvement when she and her husband, Glen, became the parents of three children who attended public schools. A professional in early childhood education, sociology, family life education, and parent education for more than 35 years, she has two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in sociological foundations of education. Eugenia has been active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Childhood Education International, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (life member), and the National Council for the Social Studies. She served on the board for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, the Colorado Association for Childhood Education, the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children, and was president of the Rocky Mountain Council on Family Relations. After finishing her doctorate at the University of Denver, she became a faculty member at Metropolitan State College. She retired in December 1997 and is now professor emerita of education.

 

Mari Riojas-Cortez, Ph.D. is Chair and Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in bilingual education and early childhood education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her interest in family involvement began when she was a bilingual prekindergarten teacher at a public school district in San Antonio. Families were always very involved in her classroom in different ways and the influence on their children was noted in the way children excelled in school. Dr. Cortez realized early in her career that the success of young children came from families, even those who faced many challenges as long as they invested time working with them. Dr. Cortez research expertise includes Latino family involvement, children’s play in school settings, and classroom ecology. Dr. Cortez has published in major early childhood journals including Young Children, International Journal of Early Childhood, Early Childhood Education Journal, Advances in Early Education and Day Care, and Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, among others. Currently, she is the editor for Dimensions a journal of the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA).

An excellent text that has helped me work through some challenges with a legacy inertial navigation system in one of our underwater systems and provided a better overall understanding of the topic area, including advances in inertial sensor technology.

This book has the most comprehensive breakdown and analysis of the principles and modeling of accelerometer and gyro technologies I've seen in a book yet, though there are already some very good books on stable platform products. There's also a wealth of information on various coordinate systems used in the vicinity of Earth. While an entire chapter is devoted to MEMS, it would seem that the mechanization material (as well as alignment) is geared towards higher-end devices, in that many MEMS units I've encountered cannot readily identify any component of Earth's rotation, making much of the math superfluous for my application. There is a chapter near the end that deals briefly with aiding, but don't count on that being enough. A number of real-world periodic motions, both short-term (coning, sculling) and long-term (Schuler, Foucault), are identified, and the references to literature at the end of each section are invaluable in digging deeper. Kalman filtering is relegated to an appendix, but that is fine, as this book is significantly more oriented to applications; pick up a copy of Gelb if you need an intro to estimation.

Despite covering a wide range of complex subjects, the explanations in this book are clear. This book played a key role in my understanding of INS systems, and I highly recommend it to others.

Strapdown Inertial Nav. is an excellent book for those who would like to understand the technology or learn how to process inertial sensor data.

A good introduction from the ground up. Concepts were easily conveyed to the reader. I'm much more comfortable with strapdown systems after reading this book.

He argues that during British colonial rule (1882–1936), attempts to create a distinctively modern and Egyptian self free from the colonial gaze led to the formation of an ambivalent, performative subjectivity that he calls “effendi masculinity.” Jacob traces effendi masculinity as it took hold during the interwar years, in realms from scouting and competitive sports to sex talk and fashion, considering its gendered performativity in relation to a late-nineteenth-century British discourse on masculinity and empire and an explicitly nationalist discourse on Egyptian masculinity. He contends that as an assemblage of colonial modernity, effendi masculinity was simultaneously local and global, national and international, and particular and universal. Until recently, modern Egyptian history has not allowed for such paradoxes; instead, Egyptian modernity has been narrated in the temporal and spatial terms of a separate Western modernity.
